Gregoire announced her support for gay marragie bill passed in Wash. “The state cannot be in the business of discrimination,”
said Chris Gregoire Thursday in Olympia, Washington, as she gave her opinion on
gay marraige bill passed in Washington state. Gregoire believes: “It is time. It is the right thing to do.”
In a crowded room of 100 supporters of gay marriage Gregiore
gave a personal speech, explaining it is the state’s responsibilities to
license marriage not discriminate. In 2006,
Legislature banned discrimination based on sexual orientation in employment,
housing, lending and insurance. In 2009, the Legislature passed the
"everything but marriage law," which included same-sex domestic
partnerships the same rights as married couples in everything from public
employee benefits to pensions and employment. That was upheld by a public vote
on Referendum 71 in the fall of 2009.
On the other hand, Josh Friedes, director of marriage equality
for Equal Rights Washington, told the Seattle Times: "We have to celebrate
when people's positions evolve on marriage equality. Her journey was very much
like so many other people's journey, but she's taken it publicly. I think this
is going to help other people move in the direction of support for marriage
equality."
